<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nWhen people think of domestic violence, they typically don\u2019t think of financial abuse. But a new program has trained victims\u2019 advocates \u2013 some survivors themselves \u2013 in financial literacy so that they can better help the people they serve.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nWith a grant from People\u2019s United Bank, Jane Doe Inc. \u2013 the Massachusetts Coalition Against Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence \u2013 trained six advocates in financial literacy, and trained 22 people from the bank about sexual and domestic violence, trauma and mentorship.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nNow, each graduate will have two mentors from the bank to help support both their personal financial goals and their work with survivors in the months ahead.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nFinancial abuse \u201cis something that I see almost daily,\u201d said one 33-year-old advocate from Amesbury, who asked that her name be withheld because she herself is a survivor. \u201cThe abuser will take credit cards out under her name, max them out completely and then not pay, so that her credit is ruined. She can\u2019t rent an apartment or buy a car. It\u2019s another way of keeping her trapped.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nJ<\/span>ane Doe Inc., Executive Director Debra Robbin said she\u2019s excited for the program\u2019s next phase, when graduates will be paired with mentors.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\u201cYou created a model,\u201d Robbin said, \u201cand I hope coalitions across the country will think about how they, too, can invest in this kind of concept.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
