Jane Doe Inc. Statement on the Senate Passage of An Act to Prevent Abuse<\/span> and<\/span> Exploitation<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Jane Doe Inc. (JDI), the Massachusetts Coalition Against Sexual Assault\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0Domestic Violence, released the following statement after the Massachusetts State Senate voted to pass\u00a0\u00a0S.2703, An Act to Prevent\u00a0Abuse<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0Exploitation<\/span><\/a>:<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you to the Massachusetts Senate for unanimously passing\u00a0S.2703, An Act to Prevent\u00a0Abuse<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0Exploitation<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0Alongside survivors\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0advocates, Jane Doe Inc., the Massachusetts Coalition Against Sexual Assault\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0Domestic Violence, has pushed for passage of this essential legislation, which\u00a0will advance critical protections for survivors of sexual assault\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0domestic violence across the Commonwealth, including stronger protections against image-based sexual assault \u2013 sometimes referred to as \u201crevenge porn\u201d \u2013\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0coercive control, a pattern of deliberate behavior by an abuser that substantially restricts another person\u2019s safety\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0autonomy.<\/p>\n

This legislation will bring Massachusetts into line with 48 other states that have current protections against image-based sexual assault,\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0will ensure that state law better reflects the full spectrum of sexual\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0domestic violence. We are grateful to Senator Michael Moore, Senator Cynthia Creem,\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0Senator Paul Mark for their work on this legislation,\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0to every member of the Senate who voted in favor. We are hopeful that there will be a swift resolution from the conference committee,\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0that the legislation will move to Governor Healey\u2019s desk without delay.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
